Radar measurements show that the region of maximum intensity of Pi1B geomagnetic pulsations moves along a parallel with a velocity of 40 km/s at the commencement of substorm intensification. This velocity then decreases to 5 km/s. The time dependence of the velocity can be expressed as V(Delta T) = 26.4 (1 + Delta T) exp -0.75 km/s, where Delta T is time in minutes counted from the commencement of the Pi2 chain recorded at a midlatitude station. The displacement velocity of the Pi1B intensity maximum along a meridian is 1.5-5 km/s.
