The possibility that the highly luminous object R 136a1 in the LMC is not a single supermassive star (M of about 2000 solar masses), but rather a compact cluster with a short lifetime (100-10,000 yrs) or a multiple hierarchical system consisting of 4-6 very massive stars (M of about 300 solar masses) is considered. The first model has a short lifetime because of dissipation. The second model is characterized by a complex spatial structure.
