A near-IR spectroscopic study of R 136 finds no evidence of Wolf-Rayet characteristics, but presents clear similarities to the most luminous galactic O star, HD 93129. Additional agreement is noted between these findings and comments by Schmidt-Kaler and Feitzinger (1981), who find characteristics compatible with a hypothetical 02V or 01IF, as well as one of the alternatives proposed by Conti (1982).
