The radial velocity of the IR C I forbidden lines is redshifted by about 8 km/sec with respect to the radial velocity of the H II region M42, which corresponds to the redshift of the radio observations of carbon recombination line emission. It is suggested that the IR C I emission originates in the same regions where the radio C I emission is formed. Because the temperature of this region is probably too low for electron excitation of the IR lines, attention is given to the feasibility of electronic recombination excitation, yielding results which are in good agreement with those deduced from the analysis of radio recombination carbon emission.
