I describe recent developments in the study of the evolution and cosmological consequences of cosmic defects, mostly focusing on the velocity-dependent one-scale model. Results of high-resolution cosmic string and somain wall simulations will be presented, allowing a detailed characterization of the small-scale features of the networks, in particular through their multi-fractal properties. It will aso be shown how this knowledge can be use to build semi-analytic models of small-scale structure evolution.
