Quasi-static electric field measurements with spherical double probes were carried out during magnetopause crossings on a number of ISEE 1 orbits. These measurements were made at magnetic latitudes below 30 deg and for different local times as well as for different magnetosheath magnetic field directions. The power dissipation at the magnetopause was estimated from measurements of the electric field and from the current, inferred from the magnetometer data. The power dissipation is found to be largest, of the order 200 micro W/sq m, near the frontside for a southward magnetic field in the magnetosheath and a somewhat compressed magnetosphere. No power dissipation is observed on the frontside for a northward magnetic field in the magnetosheath. On the dawn side, magnetopause power dissipation is also observed to be positive for a southward magnetosheath magnetic field. An approximate magnetosheath and magnetosphere convection is derived and it is also found that a component towards the magnetopause on both sides which is the expected signature for a reconnection process exists.
