An important feature of nuclei in the A=190 region is the existence of superdeformed (SD) rotational bands. These excitations in the SD well decay to states in the normal-deformed (ND) well at finite spin above the yrast bandhead. The decay involves two pathways. Single-step transitions provide direct information on excitation energy and allow spin and parity to be determined. The other, more intensive, pathway involves a quasicontinuous (QC) cascade. This study can provide approximate SD excitation energies and a measure of the spin of the SD states. The Gammasphere array with 95 Compton-suppressed Ge detectors was used to study the population and decay of the four known SD bands in ^195Pb. (L. P. Farris et al.), Phys. Rev. C 51, R2288 (1994) The measurements were made at the 88-Inch cyclotron at LBNL using the ^174Yb(^26Mg,5n)^195Pb reaction with E(^26Mg) ~132 MeV and gold backed targets. The QC decay spectrum associated with SD bands in ^195Pb will be compared to previous studies of SD band decay in ^192,194Pb. (D.P. McNabb et al.), Phys. Rev. C 61, 031304(R) (2000)
