We describe how asymmetry may be introduced in the self-consistent-field-equations of the Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov ( DHFB ) approximation to nuclear matter and the difficulties related with this question. As is done in the HF approximation to asymmetric nuclear matter, we introduce two Lagrange multipliers, μp and μn, describing the neutron and the proton chemical potentials. In contrast with the HF approximation, we must also introduce Lagrange multipliers to maintain the mean value of the off-diagonal, mixed proton-neutron density equal to zero. This is because of the pairing field, which mixes the particle-hole wave functions.
