Clear fused silica, or 'quartzglass', furnishes space optics designers with a unique combination of optical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. Attention is presently given to such space-related optics hardware as corner tubes for laser ranging, optical windows for spacecraft, and simulation chambers, as well as lightweight mirror blanks, cryogenic mirrors, X-ray telescopes, and such microgravity experiment components as ampoules, and a mirror-surface calibration standard. Careful selection of raw masterials, in conjunction with proper control of manufacturing processes, allow quartzglass properties to be modified within certain limits.
