The role of instantons in nuclear matter is considered qualitatively, and a quantitative analysis of the equation of state in the quark phase is performed. Arguments are given for the existence of a plasma-hadron gas phase transition of the first kind with a finite density drop. The calculations are compared with data on neutron-star masses, and it is concluded that superheavy hadrons consisting of light quarks do not exist.
