Segal's approach to cosmology is discussed. Modified quantized fields on
tilde M (the Einstein static universe) are introduced, and they allow a
description of the redshift. This description depends on using conformal
transformations which do not leave the vacuum invariant. However, the
field-theoretic subtleties are treated at the heuristic level.
