We examine the formation and evolution of the theta-aurora with a modified version of the Rice Field Model (RFM). The modified model simulates the time-dependent response of the magnetotail lobes and current sheet to propagating variations in the IMF. Polar cap flow and electric fields are computed via a new method, applicable to time-dependent magnetospheric fields. The new model is used to simulate the particular IMF reconfigurations associated with the theta-aurora, under various assumptions regarding dayside merging geometry and configuration of the cross-tail current. The simulations reveal a polar cap structure consistent in location and behavior with the observed theta-aurora, and help to clarify the roles of magnetotail twisting and anti-parallel merging in its formation.
