Using two acoustic echosounders, one of which operated at simultaneous wavelengths of 0.12, 0.15, and 0.19 m, the acoustic backscatter cross section was obtained as a function of time and height in the planetary boundary layer. The cross sections were interpreted in terms of the temperature structure parameter alpha and compared with values obtained in situ at the 92 m level on a tower located some 300 m distant. Excellent agreement was found between the two sets of alpha values under statically unstable conditions.
