Several unexplained auroral phenomena are discussed, including the apparent coincidence of protons with energy-flux peaks of discrete aurorae, noise generation by electrons involving coherent mechanisms and plasma instabilities, and current layers inside the plasma sheet. Known properties of aurorae are outlined, and it is shown that upward and downward currents in the magnetosphere may be responsible for the first two 'mysterious' phenomena. An open magnetospheric model is described in which the extremity of closed field lines on the night side is a neutral line. It is noted that current layers inside the plasma sheet could be related to neutral lines, although the layers on the inner edge of the sheet definitely cannot have such a relationship.
