Substorms have long been conceptually considered to be defined by a dramatic increase of auroral luminosity over the premidnight region within a short time (i.e., an explosive event). Auroral images, obtained by the Polar Ultraviolet Imager (UVI), give us unprecedented opportunity to quantify this concept. Average auroral power is integrated over a region of 60-90 MLAT and from 21-01 MLT using the Polar UVI Lyman-Birge-Hopfield-long (LBHl) emission band centered at about 170 nm. We have previously examined large numbers of substorms, determining onsets by hand, and conducting superposed epoch analyses. Here we develop quantitative criteria for identifying onsets based on both the level of auroral luminosity and the rate at which it is increasing. These criteria are then used to create a list of substorm onsets. In this presentation, we will show the criteria, discuss its validity, and compare the automated list with a list of substorm onsets previously determined manually by K. Liou.
