The morphological characteristics of an ELF emission-type, pulsed hiss, observed on GEOS 2 are presented and in particular two types of pulsed hiss are distinguished. An explanation of the difference between the two types based on an increase in the topside ionospheric reflection coefficient in the pre-dawn hours is presented. The morphological similarities between pulsd hiss types, Pi micropulsation types and pulsating aurora types are presented. A possible explanation of the morphological behavior of two types of the latter phenomena is presented. This is based on the conclusion that there is enhanced precipitation of lower energy electrons in the pre-dawn local time sector.
