Lightning is one of the most violent electric discharge activities observed on Earth. Widely accepted models of lightning relates the charge separation to ice particle collision within a cloud. Although the charged ice particles are well-observed and experimented with in clouds and laboratories, the reason for charge separation remained in question. We performed Monte-Carlo simulations of ice crystals with mesoscale interactions and identified an ionization ratio increase caused by surface energy and the mobility asymmetry of ions due to activation energy difference as two key physics parameters of charge separation. An ice crystal surface tends to charge negatively because: i) surface tension excites ion pair creation mainly at near-surface regions of the ice, and ii) activation energy difference gives asymmetry in ion transport, so that negative charge stay on surface and positive charge diffuse inside.
