The long term heliospheric modulation of the GCR, 850-1980 AD, exhibits features that are proposed as tests of the contemporary theories of cosmic ray modulation, and the evolution of the interplanetary magnetic field. They include (1) strong modulation during the Maunder Minimum; (2) a precipitous ˜50% decrease of the GCR in the vicinity of 2 GeV/nucleon between 1700 and 1725; and (3) a 5 year variability at times of low solar activity.
