Deuterium, Stellar Hydrogen Wall
Scientific paper
We present a comprehensive overview of the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM), defined roughly as the region within 200 pc of the Sun, and list the best values for the physical properties of the LISM. We find that the LISM is a very low density environment with a neutral hydrogen density of 0.01 cm-3 with a temperature of roughly 106 K and is probably the remnant of a supernova explosion. Within this hot ionized medium exist many small partially ionized clouds with neutral hydrogen densities of order 0.1 cm-3 and temperatures around 8000 K. The best studied of these clouds is the one in which our Sun resides, termed the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). Because the Sun lies inside the LIC, it is seen in absorption in nearly all directions allowing a fairly accurate determination of the LIC's space motion through Doppler triangulation. The LIC is moving at 27 ± 3 km s-1 in the direction Galactic langitude = 184 ± 3o and Galactic latitude = [-]16/pm3o. The measured deuterium to hydrogen ratio for the LIC along every sightline is consistent with a value of 1.6×10-5, the best determined value being the beta Cas line of sight with D/H = 1.7/pm0.3×10-5. We also present evidence for a stellar hydrogen wall around the star epsilon Eri.
