The pole-to-pole passage of Ulysses has been used to study the properties of the large amplitude Alfven waves of the high latitude solar wind and identify magnetosonic waves at high latitude. Principal axis analyses suggest that the main vector wanders randomly over a hemisphere whose radius is the nearly constant field magnitude. This is consistent with a stochastic model, as shown by a statistical analysis of Ulysses' observed field variations.
