We discuss in this paper the measured characteristics of a 256 - channel prototype of the ALICE/PHOS lead-tungstate electromagnetic calorimeter. The prototype has been tested with electron and charged pion secondary beams delivered by the CERN PS and SPS accelerators. Energy, time of flight and two-photon invariant mass resolutions are presented. Data were taken at electron and pion momenta from 0.6 GeV/c up to 150 GeV/c. An overview on the characteristics of the ALICE mass production crystals are presented.
