A theoretical study shows that in the presence of dispersion the plasmapause can be considered as a waveguide for Alfven waves. Oscillating slightly in the transverse direction and being reflected from the 'walls' of this waveguide, the packet as a whole propagates at an Alfven velocity along the magnetic field, maintaining quasi-longitudinal propagation along most of its path. Near the ionosphere, the oscillation amplitude of the transverse wave vector increases, and this vector goes beyond the limits of the region of quasi-longitudinal propagation. An analysis of the motion of the packet in this region shows that, after reflection from the ionosphere, the packet can return to quasi-longitudinal propagation and can be multiply amplified due to cyclotron instability.
