It is shown that the specification of a single parameter that characterizes AA disturbances in the lower ionosphere, i.e., the value of riometric absorption, makes it possible to determine the ionization source. The use of appropriate ion-recombination schemes makes it possible to calculate the vertical distribution of the electron density. Attention is given to how fluxes of precipitating particles affect the electron-density distribution in the D-region during nighttime AA disturbances. It is confirmed that the electron density at the height considered increases with riometric absorption.
