A revised technique for synthesizing a median true-height profile for the alpha-Chapman two-layer (E-F2) case is developed which employs the measured M3000F2 factor as determined by the standard 3000-km transmission curve instead of the true-model-layer factor. The process of establishing the measured M3000F2 factor with a 3000-km transmission curve is described, and the difference between the true-model-layer value and that measured with the transmission curve is pointed out. It is found that the M3000F2 dependences obtained with the revised technique generally give a somewhat higher maximum-density height for the F2 region than the true-model-layer dependences as well as an F2-layer thickness that is as much as 30% greater. A comparison with the ESSA-78 method also shows that the present revised technique realistically increases the F2-layer thickness, reduces the valley between the E and F2 regions, and improves the accuracy of the maximum-density height. A transmission curve is derived which yields the true-model-layer value of the M3000F2 factor for a single alpha-Chapman layer.
