IT has been observed that the inner conductor of a coaxial line tuned to
frequencies near 1,000 megacycles which projects into an arc discharge
in mercury vapour can be excited by the discharge if a bar magnet is
brought near the tube. Both a thermionic tube and a mercury pool tube
showed this behaviour.
