It is noted that the production of hadrons containing heavy quarks in hadron-hadron interactions at high energies can have a considerable effect on shower characteristics in cosmic rays. The presence of particles with heavy quarks can lead to a characteristic curve with a maximum for the avalanche path length as a function of time. This qualitative pattern has been used to interpret experimental data on long-path avalanches obtained with the Tien-Shan calorimeter.
