With the assumption of a horizontally stratified ionosphere and a perfectly conducting Earth plane, the form of the low latitude polarization ellipse is shown to be totally dependent on the properties of the ducted hydromagnetic wave. The diurnal azimuth variation and the preferential north-south orientation of the major axis are shown to be related to ionospheric foF2 variations. Mechanisms for the production of elliptically polarized signals at large distances from the source region are discussed. The consistent hydromagnetic emission polarization ellipses which are observed at low latitudes suggest a stationary source in the generation latitudes. Present address: Colonial Sugar Refining Co.
