The present study investigates the properties of the midlatitude electron density trough, a characteristic region of coupling between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. Intercosmos-10 data are used to examine the following phenomena: increases of effective ion mass and electron temperature; the generation of lower-hybrid-resonance noise; electric fields with strengths up to 200 mV/m in the trough; and a relationship between electron density, the distribution of VLF noise, and electrostatic fields. A mechanism is suggested for the excitation and propagation of VLF noise in the trough region.
