It is shown that the Hipparcos parallaxes lead to a very significant misfit between metal-poor F and G stars and isochrones in the M_V - T_eff diagram. The stars are shifted -200 to -300 K relative to the isochrones. Possible explanations of this deviation are discussed, and the importance of measuring oscillation frequencies is emphasized as a way to obtain new independent information on the interior structure of metal-poor stars. Furthermore, the selection of metal-poor stars as targets for the MONS mission is discussed.
