Scientific paper

The paper considers the injection of gas of variable pressure and density into a shock tube of variable cross section containing a gas at rest, a process which leads to the unsteady motion of both gases. Asymptotic formulas are obtained for contact discontinuity and a numerical solution is obtained for the case of finite density on the contact surface. This hydrodynamic model is applied to the study of solar wind disturbances initiated by a solar flare, taking account of interplanetary magnetic field perturbations.
