Abell 1689 is one of the most X-ray luminous rich galaxy cluster with about 200 member galaxies at the center of the field. The cluster redshift is relatively low redshift (z=0.185). With its Einstein radius equal to 45″, it is one of the most massive strong lensing galaxy clusters. The cluster itself acting as a gravitational lens produces 32 multiple image systems of background galaxies that lie behind it, forming over 100 arcs in the field. This situation comes from an exceptional high density peak of background galaxies along the central line of sight. This probably explains also the existence of several gravitational rings around galaxy members reported later by Limousin et al. (2007). In this paper we try to explore what rings can tell us about the distribution of dark matter in the cluster itself.
