We propose to study the rest-frame optical morphological and spectroscopic properties of a sample of six Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies (HyLIRGs) at redshifts 2 < z < 3. This sample is a subset of sources selected at 70 (micron) from the COSMOS survey. We will use NIRI on Gemini-N to obtain deep, high resolution near-infrared imaging of each of these sources. These objects may be massive galaxies in formation and a rest-frame optical morphological/photometric analysis will allow us to identify possible merger or lensing signatures. The wide multiwavelength coverage in this field has enabled us to identify signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in nearly all of these HyLIRGs, either through detections in the X-ray or through their infrared slope. In order to disentangle the relative contributions of AGN and star formation to the total infrared luminosity, we will obtain near-infrared spectra using NIRSPEC on Keck II. By using powerful rest- frame optical line diagnostics, we will be able to determine whether the extreme luminosities of these sources are driven by AGN or star formation. Together these data sets will allow us to investigate the relationship between galaxy morphology and the energetics of this transition population.
