We propose to probe the CO content of HIZOA J0836-43, a Malin-1 type HI-massive disk galaxy undergoing a luminous infrared starburst. The galaxy exhibits strong, extended PAH emission and appears to be a rare example of inside-out disk building in the local universe. It is dominated by emission from cold dust, suggesting a reservoir of cold gas fueling the starburst. A 12CO map of the core and across the disk of the galaxy will allow us to study the amount and distribution of molecular hydrogen in the galaxy. This will assist in resolving key issues regarding the mechanisms that produce the intense star formation and dust emission seen in HIZOA J0836-43. The gas-rich nature of HIZOA J0836-43 and its current phase of star formation appears to resemble disk-building processes believed to be more typical at higher redshifts. We therefore have the opportunity to study a local galaxy which is ostensibly analogous to systems prevalent in the early universe at the height of stellar mass building. Its cold gas content will reveal fundamental insight into the interplay between gas physics and active star formation, crucial for galaxy formation.
