The response of the Viking Langmuir probe in the auroral acceleration regions at a positively biased potential was investigated using time-series particle data and the Langmuir probe current recorded on orbit 176, and the results of Viking (V 4L) wave analysis for this orbit. A model was developed for investigating the effect of the magnetic field on the collection of the photoelectrons by a probe. Calculations show that the perturbations are negligible when the antenna is perpendicular to the magnetic field, provided that the photoelectron sources are at least 2 Larmor radii from the magnetic field lines connected to the probe. As a consequence, important information can be deduced for the design of experiments conducted at very low density measurements. It is shown that the magnetic field may be a crucial parameter for the study of the exchange of photoelectrons between parts of a satellite.
