Nucleosynthesis: Neutrinos, Gravitational Constant: Variations

Measurements of deuterium abundances from quasi-stellar object (QSO) absorption spectra show two conflicting numbers, which differ by an order of magnitude. The implications of these observations for the neutrino degeneracy and the gravitational constant at the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis are discussed. Taking the possible variations of the gravitational constant, the possible ranges of the electron-neutrino degeneracy are obtained. For smaller gravitational constants 0.1 ⪉ G/G0 ⪉ 1, negative values for the neutrino degeneracy, ξe, up to an order of -1 are allowed. For larger gravitational constants 1 ⪉ G/G0 ⪉ 6, a positive range of degeneracy is allowed up to ξe ⪉ 0.6 for both the lower and the higher deuterium abundances. However, the possible ranges of the baryon number density are found to be relatively wider for the lower abundances, 1.0 ⪉ η10 ⪉ 10.0, than for the higher abundances, 1.0 ⪉ η10 ⪉ 4.0.
