The first approximation to the wave aberrations of a mirror is found in a simple manner by comparing the figure of the mirror with the figure of the surface which would give perfect imaging for the same conjugate foci. In order to introduce the various primary aberrations, the following cases are considered: (a) object and image on the axis of the mirror, (b) object and image equidistant from the mirror vertex, and (c) object at infinity. Three examples are worked out, discussing (1) the effect of a change of focus on spherical aberration, (2) the Newtonian telescope, and (3) the Schmidt camera.
