A specific research and development program has been carried out in India to develop the technology for 32-strip silicon strip detectors for application as a preshower detector for CMS experiment at LHC, CERN. The production of strip detectors is already underway to deliver 1000 detector modules and 80% production is completed. In this paper, we summarize this research & development work carried out to develop the detector fabrication technology. The results of various tests carried out to evaluate the performance of detectors have been presented. The quality control procedures used for detector qualification during the production have been described.
