Life sciences experimentation in space is seriously constrained by the spacecraft environment. In particular, the procedures used on the ground for preserving living materials and fixing living specimens are rather difficult, if not impossible, to apply on board, and they need to be adapted or modified.This report describes the work carried out by the ESA Topical Team to analyse the situation and explore possible solutions. First, the procedures that have been adapted to space so far are briefly reviewed; then, solutions from theoretical and practical points of view are proposed.
