Seismic reflection and refraction data are described from four locations in the eastern Mediterranean. Over the Mediterranean Ridge the profiles reveal a great thickness of material in the velocity range 3.6 - 5.5 km/sec. The crust is very disturbed and so penetration is limited, but at the foot of the Nile Cone an unreversed line gives a depth to the mantle of 27 km. This suggests that the crust in the eastern Mediterranean is more likely to be continental than oceanic in structure.
