The Baranne white pupil spectrograph optical characteristics are described. The spectrograph allows a direct picture of the astronomical object at the same time as the spectrum. This accurate check of the slit position plays an important role in the study of any fine features in the H II region of galaxies. A spectrum of the galaxies M 82 and NGC 3079 are given as an example of its performance.
