Radio occultation experiments were performed by space probes emerging from behind the disk of Venus. Two signals at 8 cm and 32 cm were received on earth by a dual-channel Doppler interferometer. Data processing consisted in obtaining the reduced frequency difference as a function of time. Analysis of these curves yielded profiles of the electron concentration in the Venusian atmosphere for different solar zenith angles. On November 23, 1975, at a solar zenith angle of 85 deg, the main ionization peak of 185,000 per cu cm was recorded at 135 km altitude. An anomaly was detected in the dependence of the altitude of the main ionization peak on illumination conditions: the altitude of the maximum decreased with increasing solar zenith angle, contrary to theoretical predictions.
