Preliminary results of visual, X-ray, and infrared reflectometric analysis of a 160-cm column of lunar soil bored from a site on the southeast region of Mare Crisium by the automatic lunar probe Luna 24 on August 18, 1976, are discussed. The most general feature of the column is the relative homogeneity of material in the upper part and the marked layered nature of the lower levels. The maturity of the regolith, indicated by the ratio of agglutinates and primary magmatic rocks, and also by the metallic iron content, decreases from top to bottom, dropping sharply in the light-grey layer at the bottom of the column. The distribution of metallic iron suggests that sections of more ancient buried regolith may exist at certain levels of the column.
