The background radiation measured in the IUE cameras consists of phosphorescence in the detectors and of Cherenkov radiation from high-energy electrons entering the cameras during exposure. These radiations limit the length of useful exposures. In 1991 the 'Flux Particle Monitor' (FPM), which was used to measure the strength of the background radiation, ceased to function. A reasonably accurate substitute is provided by the >2 MeV electron flux measurements of the GOES-7 satellite. We provide some crude formulae to estimate the maximum useful exposure time of IUE spectra from GOES data available on WWW.
