Barbier's (1987) formalism for the cation arrangements in anhydrous germanates with mixed Ge coordination is extended to hydrous systems. A formula is presented for predicting the compositions of possible phases in the MgO-SiO2-H2O system. The room pressure-temperature densities of these hypothetical materials are estimated. Consideration is given to the use of these predictions for solving the crystal structures of the phases and in the interpretation of in situ powder patterns for materials that cannot be quenched.
