A review is presented of the processes which lead to gamma ray burst events from neutron stars as a result of asteroid impact. Tidal disruption is a prelude to conversion to plasma after the object has entered a neutron star magnetosphere. The plasma blob is deformed into a sheet which contacts the surface edgewise, thus producing the event. Energy densities of 10-100 MeV/nucleon are required to account for the observed gamma ray levels. The accretion point temperature is calculated to be 10,000,000 K. Burst precursors, generated as the plasma is accreted, are projected to yield a radiation pulse of 10 to the -11th erg/sq cm per sec with a rate density of 1/100,000,000 per cu pc per year. The concomitant slow rise times are noted to constrain observations to a coded aperture camera.
