The development of supernova remnant 1987A (SNR1987A) provides many opportunities to model and observe remnant formation. Here we examine possible emission from precursor ionization, which arises as the supernova blast wave interacts with dense circumstellar matter. We model common emission lines of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen as well as the temperature and ionization structure in the gas ahead of the shock. We discuss both the behavior of our preshock ionization model and the observational results it produces.
