A technique for precisely measuring the orientation of the plane of polarization in the corona is reported which was used to observe the eclipse of July 10, 1972. This technique involved a motion-picture camera and an automatically rotating polaroid to record the corona. A technique for determining the position of the polarization plane by means of isophotes obtained with polarization filters is also described which used photometric data to determine phase shifts between the apparent intensity-variation curve and a similar curve expressing the rotation phase of the polaroid. Results of measurements for heights between 0.5 and 0.9 solar radii are discussed. It is shown that the polarization plane coincided almost exactly with tangential direction in the region of the NW limb (least active region at the time) and that sunspot groups behind the eastern limb apparently caused the plane to deviate from the tangential direction in that region. Rotations of the polarization plane due to a radiation-field inhomogeneity as well as the presence of sunspot groups are calculated and found to be in qualitative agreement with the measurements.
