Maps of ELF/VLF emissions obtained with Ariel 3 and Ariel 4 in 1967 and 1971-1972 are presented and analyzed, and VLF maxima observed over industrialized areas of North America and Euro-Asia are attributed to the effect of power-line harmonic radiation (PLHR). The satellite experiments are described, and the map results characterized in terms of spectral dependence and seasonal variation. The North American zone and its southern geomagnetic conjugate are considered in detail; there wave-amplification-stimulated emission up to 50 dB and typically 10 to 20 dB above a baseline level were observed at invariant latitudes 45-55 deg, centered on the electron slot. The characteristics of the generation and radiation of PLHR are reviewed, and it is concluded that the localization and diurnal and seasonal variation of the VLF maxima observed can best be explained as of PLHR origin. The sharp winter reduction and storm-dependent increases in PLHR wave-amplification emissions are ascribed to variations in duct formation and wave entrapment. The contribution of PLHR to the formation of the electron slot (via pitch-angle diffusion of energetic electrons at large pitch angles by first-order resonance) is suggested.
