The behavior of the postsunset rise of the F layer at the equatorial stations Thumba/Kodaikanal (India) was studied under different conditions, to identify parameters that affect the F region dynamo field. An examination of the evening height rise features showed that, for high solar activity conditions, there is a sharp increase in h'F and h(p) in the postsunset period, whereas for low solar activity this increase is very small. The increase in h'F is maximum for equinox months. The height of the magnetic activity for disturbed days is lower during equinox and winter, as compared with quiet days, but is marginally higher during summer. It is shown through model calculations that the E region density (conductivity) gradient in the postsunset period is higher by a factor of 2 for high solar activity, as compared to low solar activity, and hence this density gradient is partly responsible for the observed solar activity variation of the postsunset height rise of the F layer.
