Measurements performed with the technique of partial reflections and vertical sounding at midlatitudes (near Khar'kov, Ukraine) are used to investigate the effect of powerful lightning storms on the parameters of the lower ionosphere, and the characteristics of noise and sounding short-wave signals. It is shown that powerful lightning storms initiate infrasonic acoustic waves with a vertical velocity component of not less than about 300 m/s.
